Mentorship Program

AFP Calgary & Area Chapter Mentorship Program

Welcome to the AFP Calgary & Area Chapter Mentorship Program.  This is an exciting opportunity to provide exceptional learning experiences that mentors can pass along to their mentees, and in doing so, expand their mentees’ awareness, insight and perspective.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Calgary & Area Chapter Mentorship Program matches an experienced fundraising professional, a mentor, with someone new to the industry or a junior fundraiser (or an individual looking to grow within their career), a mentee.  This match provides opportunities for both individuals to learn and expand their knowledge of the field.  This program plays a key function in achieving the Association of Fundraising Professionals mission: “Advancing Philanthropy through education, training and advocacy”.

Benefits of participation in the Mentorship Program are multi-faceted and far reaching.  Mentors and Mentees provide each other with new insights they may use within their own organizations.  Mentees gain knowledge and information from an experienced fundraiser that will assist them with current and future endeavours.  Mentors have the opportunity to learn new and creative ideas through the mentees.  It is a collegial and non-judgemental opportunity for the pairs to advance their knowledge and understanding of the philanthropic sector.

For the mentee, this program provides an informal career pathway that addresses the pragmatic side of fundraising, rather than the more formal educational side that the CFRE course of study entails.  It is designed for individuals who wish to acquire a particular expertise, learn about the culture of a different part of the sector, consider a new career or learn how a skilled professional operates.

For the mentor, this program provides the incredible opportunity to explain the art and science of fundraising and excite the mentee through a one-on-one relationship that is professionally relevant and meaningful.

Broadly, the Mentorship Program offers an opportunity for members to meet new individuals and learn about other non-profit organizations in the community.  The Mentorship Program is a perfect opportunity to expand your knowledge of the non-profit sector.

Definitions:

Mentorship: Mentorship is a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person.  However, true mentoring is more than just answering occasional questions or providing ad hoc help.  It is about an ongoing relationship of learning, dialogue, and challenge.

Mentor: Someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with a less experienced colleague.

Mentee: Someone seeking personal and professional development and growth through the assistance of an experienced and knowledgeable professional.

What this Mentorship Program is not:

The success of the Mentorship Program is to ensure that the mentor does not take on a role as a ‘coach’ or as a free consultant, to the mentee.
