Development Officer - Grant Programs

Purpose and General Description

The Development Officer assumes a key role in supporting the annual fundraising targets of the Nature Conservancy of Canada – Alberta Region, through the submission of grant applications to granting organizations (different levels of government, corporations and foundations). Outstanding grant and sponsorship-case writing skills, project and processes coordination, and stewardship of donors, are key functions of this role.

The Development Officer will support NCC-Alberta Region’s Development Department to optimize effectiveness in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors; specifically with regards to grant funding and management of funding partnerships. 

Reporting Relationships

The Development Officer reports to the Director of Development for the Alberta Region, and is a member of the Alberta Development and Regional team. The Development Officer acts cooperatively and in conjunction with NCC Development colleagues across the country, ensuring that department activities conform to “One Conservancy” standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will serve as a development resource for the Alberta Development Department and will be responsible for the successful accomplishment of the following duties:

1) Developing Grant Proposals and Funding Opportunities

  • Oversee the progress of grant and sponsorship proposals for various NCC funding needs;
  • Manage the grant process to gain input from various NCC departments and staff;
  • Write and design grant proposals, sponsorship-cases and marketing materials that will outline NCC funding needs;
  • Working with various departments to identify and prepare funding opportunities.

2) Fundraising from Foundations and Granting Organizations

  • Conduct prospect research through print, electronic and other sources to identify foundations and granting organizations that provide funding that is relevant to our needs;
  • Ensure qualification of foundations and granting organizations through NCC’s internal Prospect Clearance System and through collaboration with colleagues across the country;
  • Build connections and relationships with foundations and granting organizations through online, phone, and in-person correspondence;
  • Lead the submission of applications for grant funding;
  • Relationship management for several key NCC donors including different levels of government, community foundations and private foundations;
  • Management of a portfolio of 50-80 foundations and granting organizations that provide funding to NCC Alberta (including gifts from $1,000 - $1,000,000+).

3) Management of Funding Partnerships

  • Tracking of all donor correspondence and reporting in NCC’s Raisers Edge database;
  • Manage the deliverables related to funding agreements and ensure that proper reporting and input is provided by staff from various departments;
  • Assisting the Finance Department in managing funding and accounting information;
  • Managing work plans and budgets for teams that are responsible for funding deliverables; 
  • Maintain a calendar of grant application and reporting deadlines;
  • Coordinate electronic and paper storage relating to local and national data


The effectiveness of the Development Officer’s performance is measured by their ability to:

  • Achieve the annual work plan as agreed within the policies, procedures, priorities and budget as authorized by the Director of Development in the Alberta Region;
  • Foster strong working relationships with colleagues, and program or project partners.

Required Skills and Attributes

The Development Officer will possess the following skill set:

  • A keen interest in nature;
  • Fundraising experience including gift solicitation and moves management;
  • Self-motivated, with superior time management skills and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Competent writer with strong editing and proofreading abilities for preparing grant applications and donor correspondence;
  • Demonstrated ability to work within defined processes and procedures to ensure timely and accurate record-keeping;
  • Track record of working well within a team, and lead project groups to completed tasks;
  • Familiar with database management; Raiser’s Edge and iWave experience is an asset;
  • Proficient with word processing and spreadsheet software;
  • Ability to manage highly confidential material;
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and possible travel throughout Alberta.
