The Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (CCVO) promotes and strengthens individual organizations and the nonprofit sector by building capacity through undertaking research, developing resources, strengthening connections, and providing leadership on critical, systemic issues that impact the nonprofit sector. CCVO operates as a backbone organization for the nonprofit sector through providing practical supports and meaningful information, and advocating for and connecting sector organizations and stakeholders.

Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director, Community Engagement will serve as a key member of CCVO’s management team, playing an active role in determining organizational priorities and ensuring fulfillment of our organizational mission.  The Director, Community Engagement will oversee or work closely with CCVO staff, ensuring that our communications strategy, resource development, and signature events are well-aligned with our CCVO’s mandate.  The position is ideally suited to someone who thrives on working in a collaborative, fast-paced professional environment; addressing a wide range of issues and engaging with diverse stakeholders.  If you are energized by stimulating, meaningful work and the opportunity to make a different through your contribution, this position may be for you.


The Director, Community Engagement will have three key areas of responsibility: oversight of CCVO’s strategic communications plan, leading resource development activities, and managing CCVO’s signature events, including the annual Connections Events Series.

The Director, Community Engagement will provide strategic oversight and leadership to CCVO’s communications functions, with the goal of expanding CCVO’s brand recognition and reach, including: 

  • Overseeing the development of CCVO’s communications strategy, including print, digital, and social media
  • Managing CCVO’s communications budget
  • Overseeing the development and monitoring of CCVO’s brand identity
  • Overseeing and supporting the Communications Manager in the implementation of CCVO’s communications strategy
  • Implementing an appropriate evaluation framework for all communications efforts

Resource Development
The Director, Community Engagement will have responsibility for managing the organization’s strategic revenue growth in support of our service to the nonprofit sector.

  • Developing and implementing Resource Development activities with primary responsibility for maintaining and growing corporate sponsorship and foundation giving
  • Designing and directing an ongoing and systematic stewardship program appropriate for a variety of donors and funders
  • Cultivating relationships with potential contributors, including prospect identification and preparation of fundraising materials
  • Identifying and implementing internal systems requirements to track donations, financial support and relationship-based information. 
  • When appropriate, preparing funding applications and reports


Signature Events
The Director, Community Engagement will be responsible for all aspects of the planning and implementation of CCVO’s signature events. 

  • Working closely with CCVO staff and volunteers to ensure that planning and implementation of the annual Connections Conference and event series are undertaken in an exemplary manner.
  • Developing and overseeing successful signature event administration.  Working with staff and/or contracted planner to ensure that all events logistics are carried out appropriately.
  • Working with CCVO staff in all aspects of event communications including the development of promotional materials, conference media plans and scripts.



  • Experience and aptitude in communications and/or resource development and/or marketing strategy and management
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective and positive working relationships with stakeholders, representatives from nonprofit organizations, co-workers, funders, and government.
  • A strong understanding of the nonprofit sector and the various funding systems and sources that support it.
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving skills
  • Experience coordinating medium to large scale events with emphasis on project management, planning and evaluation.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize, plan, and organize work with multiple demands and deadlines and work independently and collaboratively, as needed.
  • An effective and engaging communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A postsecondary degree in a related discipline
  • 5 - 10 years experience in a strategic communications role
  • Minimum 5 years experience in fundraising and/or event planning including management, board and volunteer relations; with a demonstrated track record of success.
  • CFRE designation or willingness to pursue CFRE is an asset.
